Zithromax Precautions

Before taking Zithromax [Generic Azithromycin], inform your Doctor if your spleen has been removed, or if you have any of the following problems:-

  • Liver disease;
  • Kidney disease;
  • Irregular heartbeats;
  • History of long QT syndrome [rare heart disorder that becomes apparent in the ECG];
  • Myasthenia gravis [chronic autoimmune disorder involving progressive muscular weakness];
  • Cystic fibrosis [cysts within pancreas];
  • HIV.

Give a complete list of all the medicines that you are taking to your Doctor, including all prescription and OTC medications-nutritional supplements-herbal products, and also any known allergies you have, particularly to Zithromax or any other macrolide antibiotics such as Clarithromycin or Erythromycin.

Pregnant or lactating women must inform their doctor about their condition, before taking this medicine, as well as those who are planning to have a baby. This medicine may be harmful to the fetus and is not given to babies below 6 months in age.

In pediatric patients, only the oral suspension of Zithromax is given to those children who weigh below 45 kgs.

Antacids containing Aluminum and Magnesium can reduce the effectiveness of Zithromax, so these should be spaced 2 hours before or after Zithromax.

Those who wish to take the Oral Typhoid vaccine should wait for at least 3 days after their Zithromycin therapy is over, because if these two are taken together, the typhoid vaccine will not be as effective.

The doctor will have to monitor the blood-clotting time in patients who are taking blood-thinners like Warfarin with Zithromax.

Patients who are taking this medicine with Digoxin for treating heart arrhythmias, or immunosuppressants like Ciclosporin, will have to get their blood levels checked regularly as Zithromax can elevate the blood serum levels for Digoxin while increasing Digoxin toxicity, and increase the blood levels of Ciclosporin.

Children, as well as the geriatric population, who have pneumonia, should not take Zithromax.

Individuals who are known or suspected to have bacteremia, patients who need hospitalization, those who have a nosocomially-acquired infection [acquired in the hospital due to unhygienic handling or equipment], those who have cystic fibrosis, or those who have immunological problems that can limit their response to their disease, cannot take this medicine.

Antibiotics sometimes cause diarrhea. It is recommended that in case you have diarrhea while taking Zithromax, you should not use an anti-diarrheal without your doctor’s advice.

Sometimes after treatment of allergic symptoms, even when Azithromycin usage has been discontinued, allergic symptoms can return, which makes it necessary to observe such patients for a longer period.

It is possible that when you take Zithromax [Generic Azithromycin], your skin may become more sensitive to light. Avoid over-exposure to sunlight, or strong lights [including ultra violet rays]. If this is unavoidable, then cover yourself properly so that your skin is not exposed to sunlight, or sunlamps. Wearing a hat and sunglasses will also help.
