What Is Zithromax ?

Zithromax [Generic Azithromycin] is an antibiotic medication belonging to the macrolide sub-class of antibiotics and is used to treat multiple types of bacterial infections such as those that occur in the skin, respiratory infections [sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia], and chlamydia – a sexually transmitted disease.

Before using Zithromax, inform your Doctor if you are using aluminum and magnesium containing antacids [which can make Zithromax less effective], Digoxin, live bacterial vaccines, or water pills.

Important Notes About Zithromax:

If certain patients are taking anticoagulants such as Warfarin, and also take Zithromax, the doctor will monitor the blood-clotting time of these individuals.
Blood levels of patients taking Azithromycin with Digoxin [given to treat heart arrhythmias] will have to be monitored as it can lead to increased serum concentration of digoxin and digoxin toxicity.
Azithromycin can increase the blood levels of Ciclosporin [an immunosuppressant] if given with that medicine, so this will also require monitoring of the blood levels.
Women who take Oral Birth Control pills may not be given this medicine, as there is a low risk factor of an unwanted pregnancy, if these two medications are taken at the same time.
Never double doses, or take this medicine more than required.
Since it is an antibiotic, Zithromax does not work in viral infections like cold, cough, and flu.
